Decorating your home can feel daunting sometimes! Trust me, even after living in our home for over 3 years, there’s still spots I struggle with figuring out what do with. But these are my 5 home decorating tips I use when I feel I’m at a total loss. I think they’re good starting points to making your house feel like a home!
1. Mix different textures to add dimension
As you can tell, I prefer neutrals and don’t have much color in our house. Some people think they’re boring, but neutrals make me feel calm and relaxed so that’s just what I lean towards. Adding in different textures or small patterns helps keep the space cohesive and more exciting.
I love mixing in different pillows or throw blankets, like this chunky knit throw and textured pillow on our bed with a pinstripe duvet. Our blanket ladder also combines throws with different textures and the curtains have a slight linen texture to them – white but not boring!
2. Add wood elements and greenery to warm up the space
Our kitchen is white, white, white – white cabinets, white countertops, and white backsplash. To keep it from feeling cold and sterile, I like to add wood elements and greenery to warm it up. Canisters with wood lids are great functional decor that keep with the neutral theme and bring in some warmth at the same time. I like to use these wood risers as a plant stand and with our coffee bar.
We have a lot of houseplants so finding some to add to the kitchen was not an issue! I also have a mix of real and faux plants – I love this affordable trio from Amazon! Fresh flowers are another great way to bring the outside indoors and brighten the space up.
3. Be intentional with your purchases
Don’t buy something just because it is on sale for a great price and you only kind of like it. Only buy things you truly love. Even if it is a pricier item, if you love it, you’ll be less likely to buy the next thing to come along and will save money in the long run!
I only buy something if I have a specific place in mind for it because to me, if I buy something without actually envisioning it somewhere in my home, it means I don’t actually love it. This vase wasn’t cheap, but I had been thinking about it for a long time and knew I wanted it either on the coffee table or kitchen island, so I grabbed it when it went on sale. I’m so happy with it and don’t have any regrets about purchasing it. I know I will love it for a long time! Being intentional with what you bring into your home helps keep things clutter-free, too.
4. Keep it simple
I feel that less is more when it comes to decor. Simple doesn’t mean boring. I use just a plain white runner and a large bowl as a centerpiece on the dining table (in the spring and summer it s filled with fruit), and a large vase on the coffee table as statement pieces. If you have a big, simple statement piece, no need to add little trinkets that just make it look cluttered.
5. Don’t worry about the trends or what other people think
My last, and probably most important, tip is don’t worry about what’s “in” or what other people think. Don’t try to force a particular style or decor piece if it’s not what you really want and isn’t you. If someone else doesn’t like your style, who cares!? It’s not their home; they’re not living in it! All that matters is that you feel peace and are happy in your home, so fill it with things YOU love whether they’re considered “trendy” or “out of style.”
